Enhancing community-based obstetrics services
The GP Consortium is currently looking at how health care services for pregnant women in inner city Sheffield can be improved.
We are looking, in particular, at the way Mums-to-be who have any unexpected problems during their pregnancy are cared for. At the moment they have to be referred to the Jessops Hospital to be assessed, no matter what the issue.
It might be better to have that triage or assessment done by community midwives in local GP surgeries. This would be much quicker and less intimidating for the patient. The midwife can then decide whether a referral to the Jessops is necessary, or whether she can resolve the problem.
So, we are talking to obstetricians at the Jessops Hospital, Sheffield Primary Care Trust, community midwives, local GPs and pregnant women to get their views on the best way forward.
