A state-of-the-art building project has been given the go-ahead, marking the beginning of a new era for patients at Sheffield’s Sloan GP Practice.
The new surgery, next to the Lidl store on Chesterfield Road, is due to be completed in April 2009 and will provide patients with a range of new services and facilities designed to improve their wellbeing.
Dr Ollie Hart, a GP at the practice said: “The new practice will dramatically improve facilities for our patients.
“We will be introducing a range of new services such as minor operations, meaning people will no longer have to travel to hospital to undergo these treatments.
“There will also be a large meeting room which will allow us to hold community classes and training sessions and, in turn, improve the overall health and wellbeing of the area.”
Sloan Practice, which is currently located at 251 Chesterfield Road, is part of the Central Sheffield GP Consortium – a group of 27 practices that work together to improve the city’s healthcare services.
The practice has been the Sloan Surgery since Albert Sloan took over at the start of the NHS in 1947. The current partners have been looking for a suitable location for the new premises for nearly ten years.
Dr Hart said: “It’s been a long process – but we’ve finally found the perfect spot and we can’t wait!
“The new surgery will look fantastic. It will have two floors, huge sky lights in the roof, full disabled access and great parking facilities.
“It will also bring numerous benefits for Sheffield’s healthcare professionals, as the extra space will allow us to expand our training capacity by bringing in more medical students and trainee GPs and helping to secure the future of the profession.
“Everybody who works at the practice is very excited at the prospect of being in a brand new, state-of-the-art surgery and we are delighted that our patients will finally be treated in the environment they deserve.”
Giles Village, Head of Healthcare Services at Sheffield solicitors’ hlw Commercial Lawyers, who acted on behalf of the Sloan Practice said: “This is an interesting and exciting project that will allow people in the area to enjoy brand new and contemporary facilities.”
Residents in the area are encouraged to put forward ideas and to help shape the future of the new practice by contacting Lesley Carnall, Practice Manager on 0845 1272001, or attending the patient meeting at Sloan Practice on Tuesday 6 October, 6:30pm.
