COPD

What is it?

Lung diseases such as bronchitis, emphysema and smoking related lung disease are the fifth biggest killer in the UK – affecting around 900,000 people and claiming the lives of 30,000 people each year.

These diseases are jointly known as COPD - Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

If you are a smoker over the age of 35 you are at risk of developing COPD. The main symptoms are coughing up phlegm regularly, increasing shortness of breath and frequent chest infections.

Those affected find breathing more difficult, so it gets harder to do everyday tasks like climbing stairs and even cleaning your teeth.

.

Sheffield GP Dr Maria Read is a COPD specialist. Here she gives information and advice about the chronic lung condition.
